Repairs to the heating system
Clean and vent radiators, check expansion tanks, mixing valves, etc.
Which tasks can be carried out on the heating system before the heating season starts?
Do you know when the heating season officially starts? It starts when temperatures are below 12 °C for three consecutive days after 9 p.m. This applies to blocks of flats where heating is district heating, but in detached individual houses, the start of the heating season is decided by the owners themselves, according to their living habits.
Much of the work before the heating season starts can be done yourself. Clean and vent radiators, as unvented radiators can increase energy consumption by up to 15 %. To ensure optimum air circulation, dust, clean and vent the radiator. Then we can be worry-free until the end of the heating season.
Expansion tanks are also an important part of the heating system. You can check the operation of the expansion tank yourself. One way is to press the valve on the expansion tank and if air blows out of the expansion tank, this is a good sign. Also, if you tap on it and hear a hollow sound, the expansion tank is in good condition. Provided, of course, that no water has flowed out of the valve beforehand. In that case, it should be replaced. Even if it seems full and no water is coming out of the valve, it just needs to be filled with air. This is done by first draining the water from the system to reduce the pressure. It is the non-functioning expansion tank that is responsible for the constant pressure fluctuations in the system in most cases. If a lot of air has been let out of the system, it needs to be replaced by a sufficient amount of water. You can do this yourself. Just make sure that the system is pressurised to between 1.5 and 2 bar. If the pressure is lower, add water. However, low pressure can be caused by a leak somewhere in the system. In this case, the first thing to do is to find this place and seal it. This should be done by a professional.
We also pay attention to mixing valves, which play an important function in the heating system. They should be turned slowly from one direction to the other, and it is particularly important, if you have a weather-controlled system, to set heating curves, night-time, day-time or specific schedules depending on your living habits.
For all these reasons, it is very important to test run the system. Do this before the first cold snap. If you don't feel able to do all this, call an expert to do it for you.
