Underfloor heating

Why do investors choose to install underfloor heating ?

The way in which underfloor heating radiates heat into the room is fundamentally different from radiator heating. An important advantage of underfloor heating is the larger heating surface, which radiates 50 to 80 % of heat. Temperatures are highest at the floor and decrease towards the ceiling. The temperature profile is closest to the ideal temperature profile at room height. The temperature of the heating medium can be lower, ranging from 26-30 °C. Air movement in the room is minimal, dust generation is reduced and the environment is more allergy-friendly. A feeling of comfort and warmth is achieved at a temperature as low as 1 - 2 °C lower, which translates into a saving of 6 - 12 % in the annual energy balance. At a floor temperature of around 23 °C, the air temperature around the head is around 20 °C. It is recommended that the floor temperature in living areas does not exceed 27 °C.

Benefits

Let us highlight some of the key advantages

  • Low-temperature heating with underfloor, wall or ceiling heating offers a feeling of comfort with temperatures 1-2°C lower than with editorial heating, which translates into annual energy savings of 6-12 % on heating costs.
  • The temperature profile is evenly distributed from floor to ceiling,
  • No unpleasant dragging along the ground due to slow air movement. There is less dust, dust mites and other allergy-causing agents in the air, so heated rooms are more suitable for sensitive people and patients,
  • There are no visible heating appliances in the rooms,
  • Floor, wall or ceiling/heating or cooling maintains higher relative humidity in living spaces.

Implementation of surface heating

Laying pipes in screed

It is the most common way of installing underfloor heating. In this case, the floor also acts as a heat accumulator. The thickness of the thermal insulation must be a minimum of 20 mm. In simple designs, the pipes can be fixed to a reinforcing grid, but special PVC sheets are most commonly used, which, in addition to fixing the pipes, also serve as thermal insulation. Dry installation

The advantage of dry installation is that it requires less weight and less height of the overall layer. It is particularly suitable for the adaptation of dwellings and buildings where a low floor load is required. For dry installation, plastic pipes installed in prefabricated insulation boards are used. The dry-installed system is also used to provide wall or ceiling heating or cooling

Floor coverings

Which floor coverings are best suited for underfloor heating/cooling?

Here are some of the most suitable materials:

  • stone,
  • ceramics,
  • laminates,
  • linoleum,
  • parquet (except beech parquet).

Heating and cooling

Underfloor heating can also be cooling in summer

Because of its many advantages, underfloor heating is the first choice for heating in low-energy houses. Underfloor heating can be underfloor, ceiling or wall-mounted. With a domestic source, such as a heat pump, cold water can be fed into the system during the summer months to cool the building.
